Carers Information

Are You a Carer?

Many people do not realise they are carers.

A carer is anyone who provides unpaid support to a family member, partner, friend, or neighbour who could not manage without help due to illness, disability, mental health needs, frailty, or substance misuse.

You may be a carer if you help with:

  • Personal care (washing, dressing, medication)
  • Attending appointments
  • Cooking, cleaning, shopping
  • Managing finances or paperwork
  • Emotional support or supervision

Even if this feels like part of your normal role, you may still be a carer.

Types of Carers

Carers come from many different backgrounds:

  • Adult carers – supporting a partner, relative, or friend
  • Parent carers – caring for a child with additional needs or disability
  • Young carers – children under 18 helping care for someone
  • Young adult carers – aged 18–25 balancing care with education/work
  • Working carers – managing employment alongside caring responsibilities
  • Hidden carers – those who don’t identify themselves as carers

  • Access to respite (a break from caring)

After a Carer’s Assessment, the council may carry out a financial assessment to see if they can help with costs.
