If you have been living with knee, hip or lower back pain, ESCAPE-pain may be able to help.
ESCAPE-pain is an evidence-based group rehabilitation programme that combines exercise, education and practical advice to help people manage persistent joint or back pain.
The programme is supported by NHS England and is designed to help you become more confident in managing your condition and staying active.
đ How can ESCAPE-pain help?
The programme can help you:

- đĒ Build strength and confidence with exercise
- đ§ Learn practical ways to manage persistent pain
- đ Improve confidence and wellbeing
- đ Become more active and independent
ESCAPE-pain does not promise to completely eliminate pain. Instead, it aims to give you the skills, confidence and practical tools to manage your condition and improve your quality of life.
đ What does the programme involve?
ESCAPE-pain is a 6-week group programme, with two sessions each week â 12 sessions in total.
Sessions combine:
đ Exercise â a progressive exercise programme adapted to your individual needs and abilities.
đŦ Education and advice â helping you understand your condition, manage pain and learn practical self-management techniques.
đĨ Group support â an opportunity to exercise alongside other people experiencing similar problems and share experiences.
đĻĩ ESCAPE-pain for knees and hips
This programme is designed for people with long-term knee or hip pain associated with osteoarthritis.
You may be suitable if you:
- Are over 45
- Have experienced knee or hip joint pain for at least 3 months
- Have a clinical diagnosis of osteoarthritis
- Are able to take part in a regular exercise programme
- Can exercise in a group setting with minimal supervision
đ§ ESCAPE-pain for backs
ESCAPE-pain for backs is designed for adults with persistent or recurring non-specific lower back pain.
You may be suitable if you:
- Are 18 or over
- Have had lower back pain for more than 3 months, or experience recurring episodes
- May also experience sciatic pain
- Are able to take part in an exercise programme
- Would benefit from group-based rehabilitation
Your suitability for the programme will be assessed before you start.
